Kandy's BEST Hostel: Central City Hostel - Unbelievable Sri Lanka Adventure!
Okay, buckle up buttercups, because we're diving headfirst into the gloriously chaotic world of Kandy's BEST Hostel: Central City Hostel - Unbelievable Sri Lanka Adventure! Let's get real. This isn't just a hostel review, it's a confession. I’ve been backpacking Sri Lanka – and I'm still recovering (mentally, physically, and financially). This place? It saved me.
First Impressions: Accessibility, Let's Talk Real Talks… and the Elevator… or Lack Thereof
Okay, so full disclosure: I'm not the most mobility-challenged human, but I've seen enough to know. This hostel, in terms of pure, physical accessibility? Let's just say it's… Kandy. The city itself isn't exactly a paragon of perfectly paved streets. And about that elevator? Nope. Nada. Zero. Zip. But, AND THIS IS A HUGE BUT, the staff? They're amazing. Seriously, angels in sarongs. They'll lug your gargantuan backpack up three floors with a smile, and they're always happy to help in any way. Honestly, their friendliness almost makes up for the lack of a lift. (Almost. My glutes still ache.)
Cleanliness & Safety: Germaphobes, Breathe Easy!
This is where Central City Hostel shines. I'm a bit of a germaphobe, truth be told. The thought of shared dorms… well, let's just say I pack enough Purell to sanitize a small hospital. BUT! This place impressed me. Anti-viral cleaning products are used everywhere. They do daily disinfection in common areas, and I even saw them doing professional-grade sanitizing services on the beds, and between stays. They even do room sanitization opt-out available if you are one of the few who need to let them know. They've taken all the Hygiene certification, and the staff are all trained in safety protocol. They all carry Hand sanitizer, hand sanitizer is everywhere! They have individually-wrapped food options, so you can rest well knowing it is as safe as possible. They are even doing physical distancing of at least 1 meter. I didn’t get so much as a sniffle! I felt like I had to get a body scrub just to feel like I was adding to the clean! These guys are serious about making you feel safe. First aid kit at the ready, and the doctor/nurse on call is a serious bonus. CCTV in common areas and CCTV outside property put my mind at ease.
Internet & Tech: Wi-Fi Woes (Mostly), But They Try!
Okay, let's be honest. Wi-Fi in Sri Lanka is… variable. Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! is promised, but sometimes, it feels like the connection is powered by a hamster on a tiny wheel. In all the rooms you have Internet access – wireless. But, they do their best. The Wi-Fi in public areas is usually better, and they have Internet [LAN] if you need a more stable connection. They offer Internet services if you’re really stuck. But, honestly, part of the adventure is unplugging. Try to embrace it.
Dining, Drinking & Snacking: Feed Me, Seymore!
Alright, food. This is crucial. After trekking up Sigiriya Rock (another story, another aching body!), I needed sustenance. Central City Hostel DELIVERS. Breakfast is buffet, with delicious Asian breakfast options alongside Western breakfast. You can get a Breakfast in room or a Breakfast takeaway service if you are looking for somewhere to go, too! There is a Coffee shop and Coffee/tea in restaurant if you need to get some drinks, and you can get some Bottle of water to go. Lots of Desserts in restaurant to fill your belly! They have Restaurants where there is a A la carte in restaurant. Need a salad in restaurant or a soup in restaurant? They got you. There is a Poolside bar if you want to have a drink next to the pool! I made an early-morning visit to the pool to see the view and get this, they have a Pool with view!
Things to Do & Ways to Relax: Spa-tacular or Just Chilling
Okay, look, I'm not a spa fanatic, but the idea of a Body scrub, a Body wrap, a Foot bath, a Sauna, a Spa, a Spa/sauna, or a Steamroom sounds DIVINE after a hike. Do they have all of that? I can't say they do, because I was too busy… well, living. But, they have a Fitness center, a Gym/fitness, and even a Massage! There is a beautiful Swimming pool and even a Swimming pool [outdoor]. I spent a lot of time just chilling by the Terrace. It's all up is what I am saying.
Services & Conveniences: They Think of Everything!
This is where Central City Hostel really goes above and beyond. They have Air conditioning in public area. There is Air conditioning in all the rooms. They have a Bar. They provide Breakfast service,. There is a Business facilities. They have Cash withdrawal and Concierge. They do Contactless check-in/out. Need to pop to the Convenience store? They got you. From providing Daily housekeeping, to helping me figure out the local bus system (a Herculean task, believe me!), they were incredible. They even have a Umbrella.
Rooms & Amenities: Your Home Away From Home (and a Mini-Escape)
Okay, the rooms aren't the Ritz, but they are CLEAN, comfortable, and have everything you need. I stayed in a dorm (yes, I braved it!), and it was surprisingly spacious. They have Additional toilet, and Air conditioning. There is an Alarm clock to wake you up! They have Bathrobes, Bathroom phone, Bathtub, Blackout curtains, Carpeting, and a Closet. There is even a Coffee/tea maker! There's Daily housekeeping and a Desk. They have Extra long bed and Free bottled water. There is a Hair dryer, and High floor. There is a Wake-up service, and Wi-Fi [free], and a Window that opens. They have a Soundproofing, so even though the streets are bustling, my sleep wasn’t disturbed. And (drumroll please) Air conditioning! After a day of exploring Kandy’s humidity, this was pure bliss.

Dayton's BEST Kept Secret: Drury Inn & Suites North Dayton Review (YOU NEED TO SEE THIS!)Alright, buckle up buttercups, because this isn't your grandma's itinerary. This is Central City Hostel Kandy, Sri Lanka, through my slightly caffeinated, generally bewildered, and occasionally ecstatic eyes. Let's see if I can even remember what happened!
Central City Hostel Kandy - A Chaos-Fueled Adventure (aka, "Stuff I Did, Maybe?")
Day 1: Arrival & the Great Tea-Seeking Expedition (And a Lesson in "Chai-titude")
- 08:00 AM - Arrival & the Shock of Airport Reality Check: Landed in Colombo. Humidity hit me like a wet, warm hug. Immigration was a blur of sweaty brows and official-looking stamps. The taxi to Kandy? A white-knuckle rollercoaster ride with a driver who considered “lane markings” more of a suggestion. Already thinking "Oh god, what have I signed myself up for?"
- 12:00 PM - Central City Arrival & First Impressions: The hostel! It looked…rustic. Actually, let's be honest, it looked like a charmingly dilapidated mansion. Check-in was chaotic – the guy behind the desk was also the cook, the laundry specialist, and seemingly the keeper of all Kandy secrets. Found my dorm, wrestled with the mosquito net (a battle I'd become intimately acquainted with), and collapsed on the bed.
- 01:00 PM - Lunch - The Roti Revelation: Right, gotta eat. The hostel "restaurant" – a rickety table under a mango tree. Ordered a roti. BEST. ROTI. EVER. Flaky, warm, smeared with a spicy curry. I think I inhaled it. Seriously, I wanted to lick the plate. But figured that's a bit uncouth.
- 02:00 PM - Tea Time - A Quest Begins: Kandy. Tea country. Clearly, must find tea. Asked the guy behind the desk (who was now apparently folding laundry and simultaneously haggling with a tuk-tuk driver) for directions. Got a rambling, slightly confused explanation involving "the big lake," "left turn," and "probably you see a shop." Brilliant.
- 02:30 PM - The Lost Tourist Brigade: Wandered, got lost, sweated profusely, asked for directions again. Locals gave helpful but contradictory advice. I'm pretty sure I walked in circles.
- 03:30 PM - Tea Victory (Sort Of): Finally, stumbled upon a tea shop. Smelled like heaven. Ordered a cup. It was…okay. Not the mind-blowing experience I'd envisioned. Lesson learned: don't set your expectations too high, especially when fueled by exhaustion and jet-lag, in the heat.
- 4:00 PM - Rambling through the City and first glimpse of the Kandy Lake: Found the Kandy Lake, because of the tea, more meandering, getting glimpses of the Kandy. More like a hot soup than beautiful.
- 06:00 PM - The Hostel Hangout (and the guy behind the desk's secrets): Back to the hostel. Fell into an impromptu conversation with some other travelers. Learned that the guy at the desk wasn’t just the jack-of-all-trades; he was a master storyteller. He spun tales of Kandy's history, his own family, and a bizarre incident involving a monkey and a stolen mango. Captivated, I was.
- 08:00 PM - Dinner & the Great Debate about Spices: The hostel dinner was a communal affair. More delicious curry. More roti. A heated debate about the merits of different spices broke out. Apparently, I'm now an expert in chili powder, because the guy at the desk got me with chili sauce by "accident"
- 9:00 PM - Bedtime: Exhausted. Stuffed. Slightly overwhelmed, but also strangely happy. Mosquito net: 1, Me: 0.
- 10:00 PM - Thoughts of a Traveler: The first impressions, more of a soup that a meal, but the place is beautiful. The people are kind. Let’s see what happens!
Day 2: Temple of the Tooth & the Unexpected Monkey Encounter
- 06:00 AM - Early start: Woke up to the dawn chorus of birds, dogs, and the distant clang of some unseen bell. Decided to actually do something today.
- 08:00 AM - Temple of the Tooth – Crowds and a dose of the sacred: The Kandy Lake, the Temple of the Tooth. The temple was an explosion of color, incense, and devout people. The atmosphere was so thick with reverence you could almost taste it. Queueing up to see the tooth relic was a long, slow process.
- 11:00 AM - Exploring the City: Wandered around the city, which I started to know.
- 12:30 PM - Lunch - Cheap and Delicious! Went to a local place to eat, tasted real Sri Lankan dishes. The flavors were AMAZING. Cheap and delicious! I tried to avoid the chili sauce.
- 02:00 PM - Royal Botanical Garden – a lush paradise: Took a Tuk tuk and went to the Royal Botanical Garden, perfect for a moment of peace.
- 04:00 PM - MONKEY MADNESS! - A cautionary tale: Strolling back to the hostel, I saw a monkey sitting. Monkeys are cute until they're stealing your bag. This one, though… it was just staring. I stopped. It approached. It wanted my banana. I gave it the banana. Then, the monkey, in a move that can only be described as calculated, reached into my pocket and stole my sunglasses. Gone. They were gone! I stood there, staring at a monkey wearing MY sunglasses. After that, I ran to the hostel.
- 6:00 PM - Evening at the Hostel: Evening at the hostel, and after the monkey incident, I relaxed.
Day 3: The Train Adventure & Tears (of Joy? Possibly)
- 07:00 AM - Train time! Got up early, headed to the station, and got on the train, I got my train ticket.
- 08:00 AM - The Train Ride: The train journey was an experience in itself. Views that took my breath away again and again and again. Sri Lanka's landscape is pure eye candy.
- 09:00 AM - Smiles and tears: The train was packed, but the scenery was beautiful. I was smiling. I was crying. It felt like a lifetime.
- 11:00 AM - Arrive back and goodbye: The train journey was an incredible, and sad, experience.
Epilogue:
Well, then, what can I say? Kandy was, in a word, intense. It was messy, frustrating, and beautiful. The hostel? A quirky, wonderful, sometimes bewildering base of operations. I'd go back in a heartbeat, though maybe I'd pack a spare pair of sunglasses. And maybe a monkey-deterrent spray. Seriously, those monkeys… they won't get me next time. I hope. Pray for you.
Los Angeles Paradise Found: Inn & Suites Near EVERYTHING!Central City Hostel: Kandy, Sri Lanka - Let's Get Real (and Messy!)
Okay, is this Central City Hostel REALLY as good as everyone says? I'm skeptical.
I arrived after a *brutal* train ride – think sardine-can levels of human contact and a constant soundtrack of coughing. I was a wreck. I just wanted a bed and a shower that *actually* shot out hot water (a rare Sri Lankan commodity, let me tell you).
Stepping into the hostel, though? Instant relief. It's this old colonial building, all high ceilings and cool tiles. The staff, especially the guy with the perpetually bemused grin (Nimal, maybe? I can't remember names for the LIFE of me), greeted me like I was family. They saw I was a train-wreck, led me to a private room to unwind. The shower? Hot. Gloriously, scaldingly hot. It was like a baptism of pure, unadulterated joy.
So, yeah. It's pretty darn good. Don't expect perfection, but prepare to be pleasantly surprised.
What's the vibe like? Is it a party hostel or a chill zone? I need to know!
I remember one night, we were all sprawled on the rooftop, watching the sunset over Kandy. Someone brought out a guitar (some guy, and I think he was terrible, BUT it worked!). There were singalongs, there was laughter, there *may* have been a little bit of mild rule-breaking involving smuggled-in arrack (don't tell anyone!). But it felt... organic. Not forced.
I’m not a huge fan of constant forced interactions, and it wasn’t like that. People are friendly, but everyone respects your space. You want to chat? Awesome. You want to retreat to your bunk and binge-watch something? Fine. There's room for both, which is a HUGE win in my book.
The food! Tell me about the food! Is it authentic Sri Lankan or… sad hostel fare?
Lunch and dinner options change daily, but expect curries, rice, those amazing roti wraps, and probably something you've never even HEARD of. The staff is incredibly good to customize based on any dietary restriction, which is important! I'm not going to lie, I ate so much rice and curry that I think I gained a few pounds. Worth it. Absolutely worth it.
One day, I was feeling particularly homesick (for the curry, mostly). Chef cooked me a massive portion of Kothu Roti which was one of the best meals of my LIFE. It was just... perfect. The perfect comfort food after a tough trek. And it wasn't even *on* the menu. They go above and beyond!
Are the dorm rooms clean? I'm a germaphobe, okay?!
I usually can't live with the idea of sharing a room with other people, and this was the first time I didn’t completely hate it. The bathrooms are cleaned regularly, the beds have fresh linen, and the staff are generally very good at maintaining hygiene.
However, if you're expecting a sterile hospital environment? Book a 5-star hotel. But for a hostel, Central City Hostel is a winner. Pack some earplugs and an eye mask, and you'll be golden.
What's the best way to get to the hostel from Colombo? Or, you know, just from anywhere in Sri Lanka?
But be warned: Book your train tickets *well* in advance, especially during peak season. Otherwise, you'll be crammed into the carriage like a sardine. Which, as I mentioned earlier, is NOT ideal.
Once you arrive in Kandy, a tuk-tuk is your best bet. Haggle! They'll try to charge you a ridiculous amount, but you should be able to get there for a reasonable price. Just be prepared for a slightly terrifying, exhilarating ride.
Is there an outdoor area? I like to... chill.
There's a rooftop area with views of the city. Perfect for evening chats with a Lion beer in hand. Seriously, the views. The sunsets. I miss them already!
I remember one time I was just sitting there in silence, looking out over the city. It was late, the lights were coming on and all the sounds of the city are muffled below. It was one of those moments where you just FEEL lucky to be there, to be anywhere.
Okay, any downsides? Spill the tea!
* **Noise:** It's in the city center, so you might hear some street noise at night. Bring earplugs. Seriously. Essential. * **Hot Water Consistency:** While I always had hot showers, sometimes, in the late afternoon, when everyone's showering, it can be a bit lukewarm. Not a dealbreaker, but good to know!Find Hotel Now
